  • Usually people get degrees in biology and specialize in marine biology. Most likely a PhD is required but not always. Other skills that are helpful are: 1. Computer skills 2. Scuba certification 3. Marine mechanical skills 4. Boat-handling experience 5. Public speaking 6. Writing skills 7. Experience using marine sampling tools There are associate degrees available in Marine Technology that give you experience in all of the above but to really do your own research, the masters or PhD is essential.
