It's a way for the Christians to say something really stupid and/or outrageous and minimize it with the use of LOL at the end of the sentence

I think it is useful. It serves well as a tool to remind the humor impaired not to take something too literally. LOL

No, LOL is a word that changes the tone of the sentence. That way you can tell something as it is and then use LOL to indicate that you are not taking the issue too seriously. A bit like a dry sense of humour. Without LOL some text messages and cyber conversations would be impossible to decipher because you need to know the tone of the words.
