Is the Hilton New York a nice hotel that is close to the best of what NYC has to offer?

I've never been there, so I cannot respond clearly. However, I do recommend tripadvisor.com. They rank hotels according to reviews.

It's a nice hotel, but certainly not the best of what NYC has to offer. If you're looking for a truly NYC experience, try one of Ian Schrager's or Morgans hotels. They are each unique and comparatively priced. They're all pretty fun and centrally located.
