At the time of Christ there was a view held among the sects that the use of make-up and jewellery was of demonic origin.

The wearing of earrings is, along with the animistic origins of the Saiva and other Indo-Aryan religions, of great antiquity. There seems little doubt that the wearing of earrings by men, as well as women, was originally, amongst the Indo-Europeans, of an adherence to animistic or idolatrous practice involving elements of Chaldean theology, which spread both east and west. It was forbidden by a simple analysis of Genesis 35:4. Despite its eradication by Jacob, the wearing of earrings appears to have crept back into use during the Egyptian captivity. The cessation of the practice with Moses appears to have lasted for an indeterminate period with amulets in general going underground or, more correctly, under garment. Most of the Anglo-Saxon people no longer understand the origin of the practice.
The wearing of jewellery generally appears to have stemmed from the same practice as that of earrings – namely, as amulets against the spirits, and the serpent amulet was the most prominent form. This was associated with the crescent moon or the whole rounded form as a circle.

    Indian Examples of the Origins
The clearest example of the original intention as an animistic fetish is found in the practice of the Kanphata Yogis of India, a sub-sect of Saiva ascetics named from the practice of splitting their ears and placing a large earring made of agate, horn or glass, about two and a quarter ounces in weight, in the ear as a symbol of their initiation.

According to Magical Arts evil spirits were thought to be able to enter the body through any of its openings and take control. "The first earrings were probably worn to bar the way to these spirits and so was the first lipstick."

"Earrings are rings that are worn in the ears. Piercing the lobes to allow the wearing of earrings is an ancient practice.

"Most parts of the body have been pierced for various magical and religious reasons throughout the ages. Ears may have been among the first, along with the nose which is still pierced in India for protective, as well as cosmetic reasons.

"Folklore still surrounds this practice. Pierced earrings m general are often recommended to strengthen weak eyes— if set with emeralds, they are particularly effective. Gold earrings are often worn by those wishing to cure headaches, though some say to wear one gold earring and one silver for this purpose."

In Genesis, when God told Jacob to go the Bethel, Jacob:

"said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem" (Genesis 3 5:2-4).

When Jacob’s household was ready to seek God, they got rid of all their earrings and idols. What some people don’t realise is that Satan is a liar and a deceiver. Instead of these items protecting an individual from the evil spirits, they are actually attracting evil spirits.

Hosea 2:13 says that Israel "decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat Me, saith the Lord."

I Timothy 2:9-10 advises: "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works."

Concerning pierced ears, a former witch, David Meyer, reports:

"I think it is interesting to note at this point that Hillary Clinton said that she did not allow Chelsea to have her ears pierced until she was 13. There is, of course, a very good reason for that. It is a known fact among occultists that when a girl is 13, she is taken into what is called the ‘outer court’ of a coven, and the token of this child becoming a neophyte witch is the piercing of the ears."

Earrings were also a symbol of slavery. -- Masonic and Occult Symbols Illustrated, pp. 305-307.

Not quite a full answer I know, but back in the days of sailing ships and pirates a man would wear an earring if he had survived a shipwreck, typically a gold hoop, and that is where we get the classic pirate image from.

Dates as far back as the neolithic era, believe it or not there have also been prehistoric combs found.

    Hi CCCJJJ,
Would you mind taking a look at this as well, to also include in your studies...I appreciate your 'searching Scripture,' for the purpose of UNDERSTANDING WHAT these passages mean, in themselves, and not just for the purpose of 'proving a point or justifying a standpoint. It's refreshing to see that someone isn't 'bending and twisting,' Scripture to better suit /accomodate their desires, promote their business, justify their actions, etc. It pains me to see HOW MANY WILL use the Scripture this way.
I would like to study more on this subject in BETTER understanding the LANGUAGE as well as the history AND context of EACH individual passage, as all references of 'ear rings,' signets, etc. are used in different instances to express different ideas. I also LOVE to search His Word and see WHAT it DOES say on various topics...
What do you think of this (in terms of any historical evidence /support) and would you say it is a good or reliable understanding /correct interpretation of these passages?

" ear-rings" (Numbers 31:50 the King James Version). chotham, "signet," mentioned in Genesis 38:18,25; Exodus 28:11,21,36; Exodus 39:6,14,30; Jeremiah 22:24; Haggai 2:23, etc., was probably usually a seal ring, but in Genesis 38 and elsewhere the seal may have been swung on wire, and suspended by a cord from the neck. It was not only an identification, but served as a stamp for signature. galil, "circle" (compare "Galilee," "Circle" of the Gentiles), rendered "ring" in Esther 1:6; Song of Solomon 5:14, may rather mean "cylinder" or "rod" of metal. Earring (which see) in the King James Version is from totally different words: nezem, whose etymology is unknown, aghil, "round," or lachash, "amulet"; so the Revised Version (British and American). The "rings" of the wheels in Ezekiel 1:18 (the King James Version) are gabh, "curved," and mean "rims" (American Standard Revised Version), "felloes." Egyptians especially wore a great profusion of rings, principally of silver or gold, engraved with scarabaei, or other devices. In the New Testament the ring, daktulios, "finger-ring," is a token of means, position, standing: "put a ring on his hand" (Luke 15:22). Perhaps also it included the right to give orders in his father's name. To be chrusodaktulios, "golden-ringed," perhaps with more than one, indicated wealth and social rank: "a man with a gold ring" (James 2:2).

Actually the first *Biblical* mention of earrings is in Genesis 24, where Abraham sends his servant to seek a wife for Isaac, his son, back among his native people rather than among the Cannaanites where they were living. The jewelry, including earrings, was a betrothal gift for Rebekah, the bride:

Gen 24:1 And Abraham was old, [and] well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
Gen 24:2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:
Gen 24:3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
Gen 24:4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
    .
Gen 24:10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master [were] in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.
Gen 24:11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, [even] the time that women go out to draw [water].
Gen 24:12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
Gen 24:13 Behold, I stand [here] by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
Gen 24:14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: [let the same be] she [that] thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
    Gen 24:22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten [shekels] weight of gold;
Gen 24:23 And said, Whose daughter [art] thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room [in] thy father's house for us to lodge in?
Gen 24:24 And she said unto him, I [am] the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor.

Gen 24:29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name [was] Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.
Gen 24:30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
