    Major scale...I-ii=Whole step, ii-iii=Whole step,
    iii-IV=Half Step, IV-V=Whole Step, V-vi=Whole Step,
    vi-vii=Whole step, vii-I(octave)=Half step

    You need to a major scale as your template, say C major, which is the notes C D E F G A B C
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
the number under the notes are given to understand were those notes fall in order of the scale. An interval describes the distance between 2 different notes. The interval is described based on how many half steps it is away from the tonic, or the one.
