Let's see...wasn't it the intellectuals (professors, writers, philosophers) whom the Nazis got rid of first? Subservient, or afraid? In the face of armed military, it is rather dificult to concentrate on anything but survival I would think. Fortunately, I have no first-hand knowledge of this. What exactly does he suggest the intellectuals should do? What is his "critique" criticizing? Thank you.

the use of the nazi example is spurious. his article on 'the responsibility of intellectuals' was talking about intellectuals in a democracy, in which you can say what you want. he was calling out the cowardice on the part of intellectuals who ignored state crimes occurring right before their eyes and the lies concocted to protect the state which they had the skill and training to see through. look, if you're going to give an example, RosieGHM, then give one that's applicable. the US is not Nazi Germany, though there are some similarities, and one difference is that we can say what we want. when people who have the knowledge and power to expose the government and oppose it don't out of fear or laziness, then that IS subservience.
