  • Black Talons have been proven to be a very nice self-defense ammo, but not worth all the hype. Shot placement is more important that any fancy tricks the ammo does on impact. Stick to Gold Got if it works well in your pistol.
  • Buy Winchester "Ranger" ammunition, sometimes boxed as Winchester SXT. its the exact same thing as the black talons. it just doesn't have the pointy jacket tips when the bullet is expanded. those tips don't add anything to the wounding power of the bullet anyway. Your gold dot hollow points are probably VERY close to the same effectiveness as Black Talons of the same caliber. actually they are probably more effective if anything as they are a newer bullet design than the black talons.
  • If you can't consistently hit with whatever it is you're shooting, carry a rock. If you can hit with cheap ammo, that will work. Most people get excited about new calibers, new modifications, different ammunition and so forth. All is fine if it works for you. But the most important thing is being able to hit, on your first shot, whatever you want to shoot at. A super-duper magnum is only so much dead weight if you can't hit with it. A .22 Long Rifle is excellent...if it's the only thing you can hit with. So learn to hit, with your first shot, out of any caliber with any ammo and that is the gun for you.
  • arent black talons illegal to buy and own?
  • Black Talon ammunition was discontinued by Winchester nearly 10 years ago, now. They have a similar line called the Ranger SXT, which is NOT the same, as the bullet design is significantly different. However, I hear it's still a mighty fine ammunition. Now Gold Dot ammunition I CAN talk about, at least in 9mm and .45 ACP. The nice thing about Speer Gold Dot ammunition is this: They are specifically designed for maximum efficiency of hollow point expansion at the standard velocities that more regular ammunition of a given caliber and mass are available in. What does this mean? It means that the bullet doesn't require higher than average velocities for optimum bullet expansion. This means two things: 1. Most importantly, the ballistics of the Gold Dot ammunition match the ballistics of the regular ammunition you shoot. For example, if you shoot 230 gr. .45 ACP Winchester target ammunition (which has a muzzel velocity of about 850 fps), the 230 gr. Gold Dot .45 hollowpoints will shoot the same. They also have about 850 fps muzzel velocity. So you can target shoot all you want with your regular 230 gr. ammuntion and then, later, load your pistol with 230 gr. Golg Dots and still hit what you're aiming at, just like at the target range. 2. The next thing important about Gold Dot is, since it's not a higher velocity ammunition, you don't have to worry about the extra wear and tear on your pistol that running hot rounds through it does. Nor do you have to worry about violating any warnings from the manufacturer about using +P or +P+ ammunition. Speer Gold Dot ammunition also has expansion characteristics that generally outperform most other ammunition. In fact, I saw a gun shop several years ago that had a board posted with various brands of .45 ACP hollowpoints glued to it which had been fired into ballistics gelatin. Each bullet had been measured for maximum diameter and final mass as well. The Gold Dot had not only the LARGEST diameter (1.1 inches, I kid you not), but also the highest remaining mass, with nearly the entire 230 gr. present. This was even better than the Black Talon sample, though Black Tallon was second behind Gold Dot. So Speer Gold Dot is about as fine a self defense hollowpoint bullet as you could need. <EDIT> Another really cool thing about Speer Gold Dot Hollow Points is the .45 is a full 230 grains, and the 9mm is a full 115 grains, typical masses for solid point ammunition. Which means you don't NEED higher velocities like you would for a lighter mass bullet in order to achieve the same energy delivered to the target.
  • I have some Black Talon 9's, 40's and 45's. I switched to 357 Sig & am open to selling them. How much would you be willing to offer per box of 20 to buy some or all of them? They have never been out of the original boxes (except when I looked at them!)
  • Hey Edward I'm interested in getting some of those black talons How far are you form California.
  • I have 2 rare boxes of 44 rem mag. for sale. $100 for both + actual shipping cost.
  • Don't pay for ammo that has been replaced with better designed shells. Winchester makes Ranger law Enforcement shells that are remarketed and better designed Black Talons . 1.They are better shells 2. they cost less and 3.are easily found on-line for less. Gold dots are good ammo also , lets put it this way if you have to defend yourself and are forced to use your handgun ; empty your clip into him my friend its a choice of saving your life or taking his; Let the police and GOD decide what happened . Your Friend Littlejack empty
  • Get Winchester SXT Personal Defense Ammo. SXT = Same Xact Thing... get it? Same bullet without the Lubalox coating (often mistaken for Teflon, which protects the rifling in the pistol, NOT makes it go through body armor). The STX bullet (aka "Starpoint") is perhaps the best bullet design for personal protection since it expands in soft tissue with devastating effects yet penetrates hard objects (glass, wood) as well as leather and denim to stop a threat in its tracks (shot placement dependent). Google "Winchester SXT" in your caliber and look for retailers. Some places sell this ammo to law enforcement only but it it NOT illegal for us civilians to own and use. The great feature of SXT/Talons is that the bullet "performs" in relation to the materials it hits. For example, if it hits soft tissue (body), it expands quickly with the "barbs" extruding to slow the bullet in soft tissue to dump the kinetic energy into target (thus stopping the threat)... if it hits glass, plywood, sheet metal, walls, etc, the hollow cavity collapses in on itself and penetrates like conventional ball ammo. The best of both worlds! It is a GREAT self-defense ammo that I use myself in all calibers. As for Golden Saber... GREAT bullet as well! I would put it slightly under SXT and CORBON as an overall personal protection round but barely. It performs almost as good as the SXT bullet and actually expands and produces terminal wound ballistics better than the CORBON bullet at respected velocities. Talon is a marketing thing... get SXT if available because it's the Same Xact Thing. OR get CORBON but make sure your gun is rated for +P. If not, Golden Sabers are perfect for you and G-d forbid, you have to use them! Hope this helped. BTW, please work on your grammar... it makes you sound like a 12-year-old with ADHD and not a responsible gun owner.
