Watch an episode on a similiar group in the Simpsons; you get free access to shorter routes/highways through tunnels...and nice funny hats to wear. :)

Freemasonry isn't secretive. Some Freemasons in the past have taken the idea that we have some secrets a little too far, and refused to tell anyone anything about Freemasonry. The only secrets of Freemasonry are a few code words and handshakes, and if you search enough on the internet, you can find them. Freemasonry is a fraternal organization, a group of men associating together as brothers. We use tools of operative masons (people who work with stone) as symbols of moral lessons that are important to the members. We have no real secrets, aside from the traditional modes of recognition, which are only used to determine if a man claiming to be a member really is. The proceedings of a Masonic Lodge meeting are not a matter of public record, but neither are the proceedings of a meeting of a corporate board. We don't hide, our buildings are clearly labeled, and our Lodges are listed in the phone book. Our true purpose is to better ourselves and our community. One of the most famous Masonic philanthropies is the Shriner's Hospitals for Children.

It is a "secret gang" whose only reason for existence is to be a "secret gang", a group of people who share a secret which separates insiders from outsiders, and feel superior because of it. Since the only thing that Freemasonry actually has is its secrets, they are very protective of those secrets.
