HI Jshannon,The pc is simular to the brain too much clutter and files ect it gets slow ect,I Recomend removing some files pictures docs ect backing them up on disc if you want to keep them. Then give it a good clean and defrag,.that should solve your low memory probs unless it has spyware or something hogging the cpu, in any case give it a good service.

If you've got Windows Vista... right click on My Computer, select System Properties Advanced settings Performance Advanced Virtual Memory.. and make it at least 2.5 times bigger than RAM in your PC. If you have XP Lemme know..! I show you how to do it too (pretty similar) Good luck

Right click on My Computer. left click on properties ,left click on advanced, left click on performance/ setting's,left click on advanced, go to virtual memory and left click change.at the bottom of the box is "recommended size", in the mini box above is a list of drive's and the virtual memory allocated, if the recommended and used in the mini box don't match left click the drive that current virtual memory is in, go to the system managed box and check system managed size, then left click set, then restart computer, there are other method's to set your virtual memory but this is the easiest to explain and easiest to do. As you did not say what your o.s. is I gave instruction's for x.p. If both recommended and actual size are the same then you will need to increase the max a bit. There are many possibility's why you would run out of v.m., could be memory hog program's, running to many things at the same time as a few example's. if this doesn't work post a comment and we will try something else. good luck.

Besides the other advice here, check to see what's running in the background that you don't need to run and shut it down. Screensavers are a memory hog, animated cursors, open downloaders for pictures. Pictures themselves don't hog memory unless they're open.

The last time my old computer did that, it was because I'd come close to filling up the hard drive. Go through your list of files and programs and clean out anything you don't need. Every time you finish browsing the internet, go to the internet options tab and delete the temporary internet files. Also, run your disc clean up wizard (can be found in the performance and maintenance tab in your control panel). That will free up some space. You may, however, just need to bite the bullet and upgrade the memory.

Oh well.. I tried..! I see someone has answered the how to sort it in XP...So there you go..! As to why your computer does it... Your PC uses RAM (Random Memory) to do all the work... all programs are opened and copied into RAM, and they work from there. If you do not have enough RAM, then your PC copies some stuff out to a 'swap file' on your hard disk (This is the virtual memory file). You must have quite a lot of programs open and the swap file is not big enough to held it all. Long term fix... Buy more RAM..! Anything else you need... please ask !
