If you're from the USA: Decide what you want to fly. FAA’s rules for getting a pilot’s license (certificate) differ depending on the type of aircraft you fly. You can choose among airplanes, gyroplanes, helicopters, gliders, balloons, or airships. If you are interested in flying ultralight vehicles, you don’t need a pilot’s license. You should also think about what type of flying you want to do. There are several different types of pilot’s licenses, from student pilot all the way up to airline transport pilot. The information below describes the eligibility, training, experience, and testing requirements for Student Pilots, Recreational Pilots and Private Pilots. http://www.faa.gov/pilots/become/

I would say the first thing to do before you start doing any thing else in order to become a pilot is to take a medical and see if you are fit to fly. Otherwise, you would waste a lot of money in training and ultimately not achieve your goal of becoming a pilot. Also taking a trial lesson is recommended, to see if you like the feel of it and to see whether you like that environment. You do not want to spend a lot of money and realize that you do not like it. To become a pilot you need the following; 1.A medical - either for private flying or commercial the standard is different. 2 The appropriate courses ie Private Pilot licence requires 45 hours but this varies from country to country. Some have licences that require less hours but with more limitations on use. 3.Dedication,hard work and patience. A good site for information is becomeapilotonabudget.co.uk

Flying is a great career and Pilots are very dedicated but to become qualified they need to work and study hard . Their flying life will be regular tests ,medicals and criticism. There are many easier careers but few with such challenges. To wear the wings you have to follow strict course requirements and pass theory and practical tests. Good luck to any hopefuls.
