If a person is taken to an emergency room in Minnesota and is highly intoxicated is the hopsital required to keep them in until the are safe & sober?

I would guess that the hospital would keep them until they were stable, and then the police may take over from there if they were a threat to the public, or if there were legal problems that had to be straightened out.

Unless it can be shown that someone is an IMMINENT danger to themselves or others, a hospital cannot hold them. They're always free to sign out AMA (against medical advice). (In practice, though, many drunk people who want to sign out AMA are so potted that they forget what they wanted a few minutes later...) :-)

In Minnesota if you are found highly intoxicated you are but into detox for 48 to 72 hours.If the hospital releases you, you will be released to the detox center.
