It would be great if it were that cut-and-dried. However, I don't think so. Some mental problems can be helped by proper meds..depression springs to mind. But some clinically described problems such as schizophrenia or even paranoia I think goes far beyond simple chemical imbalance. But, I am not a medical professional and I don't know for sure. :)

No, trauma has a say in it as well, usually requiring some form of therapy as opposed to medication. But for somebody's who's mindframe and related behaviour has been conditioned by trauma, often therapy isn't enough, so they still give out medication, because it isn't to say that psychological trauma doesn't alter the biological properties of the brain any less than an innate condition. :/
