By compressing the diaphragm you expel your breath (the wind). You have named the cause--the blow to the stomach, the symptoms are obvious; pain and an inability to speak/breathe. And, short of oxygen therapy, not much you can do but wait for it to subside.

You have a bunch of nerves all together in your abdomen called the "solar plexus" or "celiac plexus." When these nerves are hit it causes pain and causes the diaphragm to "spasm" meaning your diaphram moves abnormally so you can't breathe for a few seconds. It should resolve("go away")quickly unless you are really injured then you need to see a physician to make sure there is no internal bleeding, broken ribs, etc.
