  • Only the ignorant support breed-specific legislation. It is ridiculous. How obvious is it to people that ANY dog can be trained to be vicious. Some can be trained to be violent more easily than others, but basically all dogs are born with the same natural, instinctual intentions. Those intentions are NOT, in any way, to be violent to everything including people and other dogs. A dogs natural instinct regarding social interaction is to find their place in a social hierarchy and GET ALONG. That is the pack mentality which is characteristic of EVERY dog in existence when it is born. Some breeds train more easily. Some breeds were bred to be hunters. Some were bred to be guard dogs. Some were bred to be companions. Most dogs were bred to be a combination of these generalizations. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a great example. The APBT was bred to be a small game hunter (usually game that dig and live in burrows like lemmings, moles, and most notably badgers). They were also bred to be family companions. This is why you see a pit bull with "The Little Rascals" (remember Petey??). Pit bulls have NEVER been bred to fight other dogs or animals, ever. This is a myth propagated by the same ignorant people who support breed specific legislation. Some dogs can be more prone to aggression. This is rarely due to their specific breed. It has mostly to do with their natural personality and where they would fall in a pack hierarchy. Alpha male dogs, will undoubtedly, fight with other dogs in certain situations. This fighting rarely results in harm to either dog, it is merely to establish who is dominant and who is not. While fights over mating rights may be a little more intense, the loser rarely is badly hurt from the altercation. The lesser dog usually knows when to retreat. This is different, however, than "pit fighting" because it is natural and not induced by humans. If you've ever seen an actual dog fight organized by the sickos that do it, you can tell the dogs don't want to do what they're were trained to do. It isn't natural to them to destroy another dog. They instinctually know this and that there is strength in numbers. So, I'm not saying that there isn't an alpha male pit bull out there that may snap at another dog over territorial disputes. But that alpha male pit bull isn't a vicious killer because of it. There are lots of alpha male dogs that would do the same thing. The truth is, pit bulls are less prone to dog and people aggression compared to other dogs. A study was done and among others, the APBT scored higher than poodles and golden retrievers in human aggression tests. I own a pit bull. He would be the absolute WORST fighting dog I know of. He's a big wimp, and a little momma's boy. I own a black lab/hound mix as well. He is clearly an alpha male, and has "beaten up" his brother numerous times when they were growing up and establishing dominance. Although I always stopped it and scolded the lab, he still does it, not as much though as they are older now and have lived with each other their whole lives. The point here is that I don't condone or approve of them doing this, but they naturally do it. And despite what most people think, the pit bull isn't cut out for it and is not the dominant dog in my house. He's a little baby, and serves much better as what my girlfriend calls a "sniggle-bug" than as an attack dog. And if any law was passed where I live that banned my pit bull who I've had for almost 4 years and who is friendly and loving and who has never hurt anyone or any dog in his life, I would move. Plain and simple. No breed of dog should be outlawed for isolated incidents involving the same breed of dog. The people responsible should be banned, and punished severely, for producing the vicious animals they've produced, and for taking part in such a sickening and evil activity. These people should be put to death, just like the dogs they've fought and killed in the past were put to death. If you rid society of these people, you wouldn't have the problem of these so called "dangerous" and "vicious" dog attacks. If you ban a breed and succeed in its extinction, you still have the people responsible for it all, and they'll just utilize another breed of dog to fulfill their cruel desires to see something suffer and die. Banning the breed punishes the innocent, and does nothing to serve justice on the guilty.
  • absolutely not. I know a few pit bulls, and they are the sweetest dogs in the world. I think it has a lot to do with how they are raised.
