Not to be crude but, it's because you are gonna piss out most of the vitamins you take in pill form..they dont absorb fast enough to avoid this..so they up the amount so you get some benefit from them. Best if you can just eat a healthy diet to get the nutrients your body needs :)

Because the recommended daily dose is to prevent the clinical symptoms of vitamin/nutritional deficiency. To get truly healthy and stay that way requires much higher levels. There way a nasty cold strain going around work, most of the guys complained about 2 or 3 weeks of suffering I'm over it in 5 days. That's the difference eating vitamins regularly makes.
