Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org) has a tremendous amount of information about a tremendous number of topics. Pick a subject and start reading and following the internal links. For example, I search on "English". From the list provided, I choose "English language". I read through that until I get to the grammar section, which has a link to "English grammar", so I click that. On that page, I find lots of interesting stuff to read, AND find lots of interesting embedded links, like "disputed English grammar", "Great vowel shift", "verbification", and so on. So start somewhere, read, take notes, and keep on going!
