The example our English teacher used at school was from the Wilfred Owen war poem The Send-Off: "Down the close, darkening lanes they sang their way To the siding-shed, And lined the train with faces grimly gay." I'm sure there are better examples, but most people in my class understood what an oxymoron was from that.
