Grace is the name of the cook?

Grace can have a definition of "God's favor or help" or "gratitude" so people that say grace are asking for those and being thankful. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=grace Something more here: http://entertaining.about.com/cs/etiquette/a/sayinggrace.htm

I wanted to call it "Betsy" but God seemed pretty intent on naming it after Jesus's first girlfriend.

In French, it was common for them to start "Grace a Dieu...", meaning "Thanks be to God...". It is therefore an archaic form of "Thank you".
