Gas prices were so high because of market speculators driving up the price everytime some little thing happened like a hurricane or another threat of war. The gas itslef wasn't that high but because people were offering to pay top dollar in futures it rose. Now that a recession those high end people have more than likely gone bankrupt so they cannot afford to play the futures market. Mr Bill

My theory is that they raised the prices so much that people simply stopped driving or they found other ways of getting around. So now that people have stopped driving that gas companies figure that they need to lower the gass prices to get people driving again. I think they kind of screwed themselves though. Now that people have found alternative ways of getting around, they may not go back to their old habits again. They may just continue to use alternative meathods of transportation. They'll carpool to work, walk to the corner store, they'll take a bus, or ride a bike. Also, hybrids are coming out like crazy, and people are buying them like crazy. So now that they've adjusted people might say "So, I could drive there and a month ago what would cost me $35 a week will now cost me $25 a week. Or I could ride my bike like I've been doing for the past year or so and it will cost me $0 a week."
