Peanut butter, invented by the American military in World War II. Pizza, which is now infinitely better than it was when only the Italians had it. Musical comedies, which are an American art form, as is the motion picture. Powered flight. Fat poor people and thin rich people. From 1940 till around 1970 peanut butter was even more important. The military was looking for a cheap, tasty, easily transportable and preservable form of protein, so they invented peanut butter. It made the canned bread the soldiers had more palatable, too, especially with jam or jelly which provided vitamins. I've had that canned bread. Made of raw rye grains soaked and pressed together with water and rye flour, it tastes so bad that they only way I could get it down was to grill it with cheese. It even inspired the following summertime limerick: On a day like today that's a roaster I even hate using a toaster. But that bread in a can That they gave us--oh, man, I'd as soon eat my Budweiser coaster!
