I have always had a hard time remembering when to use "affect" and "effect". Nothing stuck to help me remember. Any suggestions? Thanks!

General rule that should get you by most situation is: "affect" is a verb and "effect" is a noun. You do know what those are right? There are some situations that might call for "affect" as a noun and "effect" as a verb. I'm not sure about the first case, but for "effect" as a verb, it means something like "to be a cause of something." "Affect" as a verb would mean something like "to have some effect on something."

If you are trying to describe something that was caused or brought about by something else use effect. "cause and effect" Affect is to have an influence on. I just always remembered by "cause and effect" Hope that helps!

Ok, think "The special effects were awesome" . Effects is the noun here. Now,think "Can the sun affect me?". Sun is the noun, affect the verb. So ' affect' is something that is done to or seeking influence on you.
