Biologically, older women are more valuable than older men because they will tend to help rear children, giving them a greater chance of survival. Also, men are more likely to die young due to going to war, dying in prison, more hazardous occupations, and being more likely to engage in harmful behaviours.

Look what we men have to live with. But, all humor aside, it's in part to do just with comparative size. Just like the really big and hefty breeds of dog have shorter life-spans than more averag sized and smaller ones. Higher metabolism also makes for more rapid cellular division which (apart from the additonal strains it puts on one's whole system) just makes for a shorter life-span.

It's generally attributable to "heart attacks". It is thought that women's estrogen gave them a great deal of protection. But as they near menopause, this balance actually goes in FAVOR of the men; as women no longer have the estrogen to protect them. Iron begins to build-up in women's blood at the same. . . or above. . .rate as men do as they NO LONGER loose it through their monthly cycles. And iron is a culprit to heart attacks. Smoking is ALSO increasing amongst women, which is ALSO upping the "ante" for women! By in large, the disparity in the mortality rate between men and women is beginning to. . . . .narrow!
