That would be correct, unless, of course, she made a Will stating otherwise. The line of descent is: spouse, children (including adopted children), grandchildren (including adopted grandchildren). Therefore, if your mother in law died intastate (without a will) and she was also unmarried, her entire estate will go to her children. If there are non living, then, to her grandchildren - your children and their cousins will inherite equal shares of the state. You and your sister in law will get nothing - you're not entitled to by law. Also, any expenses, bills, debts, etc. that she may have had prior to passing will be paid of the top so that the shares would only come out of the remaining balance
