  • It goes back a very long way, and I think is basically because the farming years started about then. It originally states May 25th (Lady Day) but moved to April 5th to avoid a short year when 11 days were "lost" switching from the Julian to Gregorian calendars. There were initially riots at the calender change about the "lost" days. Modern people sneer at these thinking that ignorant people feared that days had been lost from their lives. In fact, they were rioting because landlords were trying to charge full rent for a short year or a short month, and the people were not fooled.
