I used to work in the heart of them in Tampa.

Yes, and they aren't pretty.

A Cincinnati suburb called Over the Rhine,...It seriously looks like a scene from Robocop, but the rest of Cincinnati is actually a beautiful city.
-
YEP. And they are like people. Some are mean, forlorn and dirty. Others are clean, the people nice, the kids in school. The "ghettoes" are just buildings that people can make into a home.

Are we are confusing ghetto with slum? A ghetto being an ethnic neighborhood...at first created by forced segregation ie. the island in Venice, Italy where jews were placed. While never a prestigious place to live, they can be clean and nice places. For instance "The Village" in NYC or "The Castro" in SF,CA. Some can be poor and scary, though, like the Watts area of LA. I went through several slums when I visited India, and even stayed in a hotel in a very decrepit area of Mumbai (I had to, the taxi broke down and the driver was my guide.) The slum was very horribly run-down because it was for the dalit (untouchables)people. I came out unscathed except for a few bed-bug bites. I was NOT frightened though.

Yes and worse I have seen SOWETO in South Africa. That is a very depressing sight.

I went to school in Detroit. I've spent a lot of time in Detroit and the area around it. I've volunteered a lot in ghetto areas helping kids read and taking them places. It's not an uplifting sight to see, but smiles on faces are.
-
Yes, and I have lived in one. The one I lived in was not as bad as East LA but it was no walk in the park. They are not very nice.
-
I lived in Southwest Detroit for 2 years. It's about as ghetto as you can get. (I loved it, though).
-
Yeah, on Church Street near my house. I don't go there if I have the choice.
-
Ya, I did missions work down in west Jackson, Mississippi. In the top ten cities in U.S. for homocide.
-
Yep, my aunt and cousin live in one and I recall spending weekends there as a child of 5. It's mellowed out SIGNIFIGANTLY though, all older folks now.
-
I have seen worse than any US ghetto. I lived in Nigeria for a few years when I was a teenager, as my father's job needed him there.I have walked through several towns made up of makeshift shacks about the size of an average SUV, that house about 5 people each. The smell, the horrible sights of the sick or dead... I wish people who THINK they live in the ghetto could see that for themselves. Too many people whine too much about stuff that could be alot worse. Just by having the internet, anyone reading this is more fortunate than most of the world.

Ah crap... already answered this. Please flag.

Ya know any given place that is soley comprised of one race/sometims religion is a ghetto. Most folks today seem to think ghetto means black neighborhoods. The term 'Ghetto' was originally used to refer to the Venetian Ghetto in Venice, Italy where Jews were forced to live.
-
Oh, yes. In Houston, Third Ward and Fifth Ward. And Aberdeen Bay in Hong Kong is about as Ghetto as you can get. Slums in Tehran as well.
