Text book definition is : To deprive of individual character or a sense of personal identity. In action this is when a company treats it's employees like drone worker bees. No acknowledgment that they are distinct individuals they are all just part of the machine. In personal settings it is acting like one person is 100% interchangeable with another. One girl/boy friend is as good as another because there is no individuality acknowledged and they all have, pretty much, the same parts. In the environment is it done by removing all trinkets/decorations/colors that reflect a certain person's individual taste. In communication this is done by assuming/insisting that all people should/do think or feel the same.
