I own a gun to defend myself. I am a single disabled female living in a low income area (we know what that means..lots of crime in itself). I have been a victim several times of crime. I need a way to protect myself. What would happen if the only ones in the world that could have a gun were the police and the criminals. we have how many criminals to one cop.. the cops cannot be EVERYWHERE crime is being committed at the exact time it's committed all the time.. tell the criminals to stop committing crimes so people like me don't have to worry about things like rape, burglary, being murdered, etc. and I will give up my gun..

These so-called "assault weapons" are nothing more than semi-automatic rifles. They fire a single round at a time. They are not fully auto. The move to ban them is based on the irrational fear the media helps create due to the military look of these weapons. They are not commonly used in the commission of crimes. I own an AR-15 and an SKS. I can defend my home with them. I can plink targets with them. In a pinch, I could even hunt with them. Granted, there are more effective weapons for each of these activities. In reality, I own them because I am free to do so. I am a law-abiding citizen and the government should have no objections if I am using these weapons for lawful purposes.
