It really depends on how bad it is, i.e., the magnitude of it. For example, an average quake in California is not that bad, with trembling streets, shaking stores, and falling products, breaking in the aisles, with lights fading out or even breaking. On the other hand, over in the East, it can get REALLY bad. People die, and I do not say that idely. Each one can rival 9/11.

Shakey

totally cool. I put a windchime in the bedroom so we can tell when the little ones hit.

I was in the 6.8 Northridge quake of January, 1994. I live about 6 miles from its epicenter. My house was violently shaken at about 10 vibes/second and it felt like it was being slowly tilted at the same time.

yes, shaky and a bit eerie. the first we always knew there was a quake a tremor would start, just a small shiver comes up through the floor and everyone in the room freezes and waits for it, as it builds in intensity the house begins creaking and cracking and glasses rattle against each other in the cupboard,(tapping a crystal goblet with silverware at a dinner always makes my blood run cold for a second) gradually the quake grows stronger until the shaking becomes quite violent, sometimes causing people to grip furniture of doorways to stay standing. after the quake peaks and begins to fade, slowly becoming less strong and it sort of shivers to a stop. then there will be aftershocks, sometimes for days afterward, tremors that don't quite get as violent as the quake. lol and the first words from everyone's mouths is< did you feel that?!

The whole buliding your in will make sounds and depending on the magnitude & duration it can be overwhelming when stuff is falling over and down. If you have a pool it can make waves, and water comes out of the pool. All I can say is it might be only a few seconds, but it feels longer. The worse one I remember was one where it felt like the floor was rolling. It freaked me out! Everything in the house moves with you making rumbles...

I was in the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 I was like seven. I was playing war with my neighbor and felt realy dizzy. We live about an hour North of San Francisco so it wasn't that bad. In 2000 though, our valley which apparently is pretty soft suffered like a 5.3 and that shit was nuts. My bed was going up and down like a wave and there was this real low demonic roar and these green and blue lights flashing through the window apparently from gasses relased. There was a small aftershock and I was by myself I was in high school and my parents were gone. I thought the "Big One" hit the Bay Area. I also stepped on a piece of glass and that was kind of a bummer. You live thinking the ground as such a solid thing and when it moves like that it's just unreal.
