You want to write a long story, but you don't know what it's about? How can you know you want to write something if you don't have any idea what you're going to write?

What interests you in real life? Do you have a unique experience in your past that you would like to write about or even re-write events for a happier ending? How about an interesting family member? A voyage? An alternate universe? If you start with something you love or something you would love the pages will fill up.

The old benediction was, "Write what you know..." Which is a good place to start, don't get me wrong. What if, however you write about space travel...aliens...vampires? That's where the creative side comes in. Most great novels and book ideas start off as a "what if?" question. Two totally unrelated circumstances come together and KAPOW! They begin a story idea. Out of curiocity why do you want to only write short fiction? Don't get me wrong - absolutely nothing wrong with short fiction, but there is a subtle art to it - you have to get the reader involved almost immediately, draw them in and have them care about characters within the first couple of sentences...
