Couldn't it be made possible for the pilot to gas all passengers to sleep to prevent a hi-jacking or plane takeover? Even at the possible loss of a baby, or young child on board, wouldn't this be better than arming pilots with guns?

• Certainly I agree, but if it meant losing a plane load of adults, it would be worth the risk. Maybe the children could just be required to wear something on every flight just in case. Yeah, right, I know. Their parents aren't able to keep them occupied as it is . . . Oh, well . . .

• It was just a thought . . . But it certainly wouldn't be any more dangerous than a pilot having to leave his position to go use his gun! You know though, since 9/11 pilots are behind locked and reinforced doors, where they would be able to use a mask to protect themselves from the effects of gas. Regarding the on board undercover Air Marshalls, you don't have to be a frequent flyer in order to easily recognize these guys! 1st they aren't allowed to dress down, to blend with other passengers, and they travel the same routes all the time, where they obviously get special treatment from the flight attendants who eventually catch on. Ultimately the best safety prevention is not allowing the "crazies" on board in the first place, but getting good people in charge of looking and searching passengers so far hasn't been worth us paying them enough for the job! Much like teachers and cops being paid little to nothing . . .

• I know. honestly, there is no easy solution to air safety. once in flight you and i are trapped above the earth in a cylinder at 35,000 feet. you are correct on screening people before they board. its difficult since idenitification can be forged so easily. you have to still consider this....its still safer to fly than drive an automobile!

• Well, so far the 'better solution' has been to secure the cockpit, arm pilots and put Air Marshalls on SOME flights that are easily recognized. IF 'there are surely much better solutions' as you say, those aren't it. So wheat do you suggest?

• I don't know. I'm neither a security expert nor an aeronautic engineer. But I know what happened in Moscow a few years ago when a terrorist group kidnapped a whole teather. The russian special forces gassed everyone with opium, and nearly 25% of the people died...
  I think the best idea would be to have effective police controls before boarding in...And terrorism is no longer a risk in the US' planes, I think.

• That's horrible, but I had no idea, or ever heard of the incident you mention. Yes, it will take more effective police controls pre-boarding to eliminate terrorism in the air, and me too - I think!
