  • Good question. I have come to think that all religions are cults. Just because one is more popular than another doesn't mean that it isn't a cult, even if millions of people are a part of it. The thing about the Church of Satan is that the followers do not believe in an external God or Gods, unless they perceive themselves as Gods, which I am not sure of. They are atheists as far as worshipping external beings and their beliefs are in my opinion a philosophy. Satan to them is not a God or a real being, but a symbol representing freedom and indulgence in things that are not directly harmful to others. Since they are atheists with a philosophical perspective on life, I don't think they qualify as religious. By definition I can see how they could qualify as a cult. The problem with the word "cult" is that it has a bad connotation behind it from groups of people who have caused much public attention in ways that freak people out in Deadly ways. Hail Bop is a good example. I would rather not see the Church of Satan as anything more than a philosophy on how to live life more freely. Check out The Satanic Bible for some info, unless you are strictly religious.
  • It depends who you talk to. To those who are members of the Church of Satan it is a Church. The the U.S. Government it is a Church. To born again Christians it is a cult. It's all about point of view.
