What does no. stand for? I know no. is number but should it not be nu.?

I guess that would depend on where the abbreviation originated. In Spanish, number is nombre, so no. would make perfect sense. I would imagine the Latin word is probably close to nombre, and that is where it came from.

In Latin, I believe the word for number is something like "Numero," for which "no." is an abbreviation.
