no i dont think so but you can pick up viruses off lime wire so be careful if you are going to use it. you can download it for free aswell so dont pay on the sites where it says you need to pay.
-
yes but there is pretty much no way you can get caught unless the cops are downloading it with you.....
-
i was scammed by a site i paid 33 pounds for limewire which didnt work, not impressed but we live and learn eh!
-
Let's put it this way. It helps you do the illegal downloading. Look at it as the store that sells you pipes, incense, and rolling papers. Or more accurately, it's the nightclub you frequent that everyone knows harbors illegal activity. Technically, it's not illegal, but Limewire presents the forum by which you then have the access to those that want to share files. People say it's free, but I've always had to pay to gain access. Technically, the internet is free in many cases, but we (or host institutions) pay in some measure to access it, and further for those sites that fulfill our niche desires. The benefit to Limewire type sites is, there is no per download fee, so you can go hogwild. Something like 30 or 40 bucks is the most I've heard for a year, and about $100 for "lifetime", which if it's more than a year, it's still worth it.
-
NO thats the way most people get there music these days what do u think people who have 1000 songs paid a doller for each one and some people say it gave them a virus
-
Excellent question. My kids bought the sansa 6 gig, and his twin had the creative zen 30 gig... both used Limewire, and one of the players [zen?] actually recommended it. I tried to research it as they like to use my computer too when downloading. Still not sure. We stop and listen to the song during downloading, to make sure it's what it says, and the correct version (not into live versions when the artist is bored w/ the song and going all over the place w/ their voice...). Also, I have the latest, best anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, etc crap to help....
-
simple. it is if you haven't paid for it. nothing's free. you can buy it at any computer software store. if you download a free version you run a risk of attracting a lot of virus's
-
limewire isn't illegal as long as you don't download songs and make cd's and sell them for profit
-
A lot of interesting answers on this one! Limewire Basic is absolutely free: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml The "Pro" version of the software is also available for download as well, for a one-time cost of $18.88. As far as legality, there is nothing illegal about the software. The distribution of copyrighted works is, however, illegal. All peer-to-peer file sharing protocols (Gnutella, Bitorrent, etc..) are, in theory, designed to give independent artists and others a way to easily distribute their music and other materials to a large audience cheaply and easily. Most people, however, have found these networks to be an easy and bountiful forum for sharing with complete strangers the contents of their entire music libraries (among other things, such as software, games and movies.) The MPAA (The Motion Picture Association of America)and RIAA (The Recording Industry Association of America) have been battling the makers of these types of software since their inception. They have, for the most part, failed. Other steps have been taken by those representing the interests of copyright holders, such as flooding peer-to-peer networks with bogus files, which, in theory, makes downloading pirated music less attractive. The RIAA has also made headlines in the past couple years in taking steps to bring legal action against file-sharers. The people on whom legal action has been brought have all been people that the RIAA has determined to be a sharing a "large" number of copyrighted works, meaning those that have made the files available for download, rather than those who are doing the downloading. In short, the software is fine, sharing illegal materials is not (regardless of whether it is done for a profit.)

Do not sell what is free!
-
limewire is not illegal,...but lots of whats on its network is.
-
It's set up for file sharing, but it leaves the content of those files entirely up to the members. So, of course there is a lot of stuff being swapped that shouldn't be, according to the law.
-
i know some people that have used it and so far so good. but still be carefull
-
if i do get caught and tell them "lime wire said its 100% legal so thats why i did it" will i go to jail?? i mean like wut if i said i didnt no it was illegal because it said its legal and if i print out the page that does say its legal and show it to them will i still get fined or go to jaiL? its not fair if i did because there web site does actually say its LEGAL even tho it may not be......... -
Its legal as long as you do not download copyrighted material ie computer programs that you do not hold a license for or music that is copyrighted. It as got loads of freeware (free to the public) on it:- including songs from new and up and coming bands as well as programs, games, films etc
-
I just want to know sumtin myself. Can I still be charged if I totally delete limewire from my computer?
-
Also, another quick thing. Can the cops still see the songs I downloaded when I totally delete Limewire? I'm just paranoid that I can get in big trouble for gettin the music, which is why I deleted Limewire.
-
unless you want it to be.
-
no its not illegal its jjust if you download songs and put them on a Cd and sell them thats when you can get in trouble.
-
technically no...its p2p sharing so your not downloading anything illegal...but if you download movies that arent released yet and sell them for your own profit then of course its illegal...but ive used limewire since it first came out and the whole virus thins is simple...before opening the file run a virus scan on it...also dont download anything that looks suspicious...but i make a bunch of cds from it and i dont sell them i use them for me and my family and thats it...just be careful on what you are doing
-
limewire is not illegal. but if you download and copyright there music than it is but everyone seems to use it. and noones gotten caught for it. so i wouldnt worry about it. id use it
-
it is but i have it anyway 'cause it's pretty unlikely to get caught
-
That depends on how you use it. There is an option to download only material that is not copyright protected. If you are concerned there are alternatives. Frostwire, Bearshare, etc.
-
I paid a fee for Limewire so I hope it is not illegal. It is pretty useless anyway. Not enough choice or variety.
-
Limewire is not an illegal program. Using it do download copywrited materalials is not illegal. Downloanding copywrited materalials using any program is illegal. You may want to consider that as a part of the lawsuit settlement with the Entertainment Industry, Limewire, Kaza and all the other P2P program providers must report everyone that downloads the programs, to them.
-
no its not as long as you dont make a cd and sell it.
-
no it's not it's what u do on limewire which makes it legal or not
-
well i dont really know its illegal or not some however say its not. but... limewire is a very good utility for hackers for getting personal information about the user so be carefull.
-
Limewire itself isn't illegal. However, about 95% of the files on limewire are illegal.
-
I can't believe some of the answers you have got, year 2007, Internet and Google available and people still think they can download copyrighted work for free without infringing any laws. Amazing. Anyway, so that I don't go away without replying to your question: Limewire is not illegal, but downloading copyrighted material is. But when installing the software why don't you just read the disclaimer for more info? I am talking about the one window where you MUST tick on the box that relieves the makers of the software from any responsibility and passes it to you! Lol incredible.
-
im not sure, I really dont think its legal as long as pro after reading another web page. i think its illegal if you down load because the artists arent gettin paid. Pro is illegal because the artists dont get a cent of the profit
-
yes. limewire is illegal. but the main reason why some people dont use limewire is because it gets your viruses and slows down ur pc. and cud lead 2 damaging ur pc.
-
no, limewire is not illegal, hust what you download might be...
-
yes well... limewire is not illegal, but downloading copyrighted matierial is... quite how they police it im not sure... be careful though, as if you ever need your PC repairing, then the man can detect whether you have used illegal downloading, and if he doesnt report it, he is an accomplice. hope i have helped jake

We've all read the fine print... and all the Internet Police have been here to talk trash.. but the bottom line is: I cannot afford $1 per song, The "Starving Artists" are Driving round' In Bling...Bling..Bling.. Mercedes, Ferrari's, and Bentley's all day long. Have you seen MTV's Cribs lately? Notice that Im not on that show. lol. All of the Rock and Hip-Hop. etc Stars are there though arent they? In Conclusion: As long as I just download mp3's for personal use.. Im not worried about much else. Plain and Simple. Joey A... Cranking my Tunez all day long! Bam!
-
No, but what people mainly use it for is illegal.
-
I think at one time they were trying to file charges against all of the P2P filesharing programs, ie Kazaa, Morpheus, Napster, Warez... but from what I have found out, there was a loophole in their charges, and by the time it was all over, some programs like Napster decided to play it safe either way, and start charging, but others waited out the heat, and now, from what I have found out as well, the charges never stuck, and the programs, including Limewire, continued on with their free-based and subscription-based Pro P2P filesharing programs.
-
yes it is illegal and if you get cought with it you will get fined 2,500 rich or pore and if you don't have enought money you will go to jail besides the thing about lime wire is when you down load something they take stuff off your computer with out you knowing
-
Yes it is...I know first hand...
-
Yes, I heard it in a song. Also I already knew that. Wierd a friend of mine gets all his music on limewire.
-
Yeah, Limewire IS Illegal. My.. ex .. stepdad had the cops come over oncee
-
Limewire is legal like any other P2P program, but downloading any copyrighted music or other copyrighted material is illegal.
-
Guns are legal and so is limewire. What you do with it, is a whole different story. If guns kill people, then.. -Pencils miss spel words -cars make people drive drunk -spoons make Rosie O'Donnell Fat -Limewire causes piracy. (Not)
-
Okay so point blank is making a cd for personal use-not to sell for profit....is this illegal if using limewire? It seems as if there are no clear answers given.
-
it seems like it is b/c jacks up almost everyone's computers (including mine)!
-
no, but what people mostly use it for is illegal.
-
I have heard it is.
-
Limewire is not illegal, however some of the content exchanged through limewire may be copyrighted and therefore illegal for download.
-

Limewire is legal yet a little limp in defence against immoral impressions to be activated without intention!
-
Yes I have Limewire .I paid for Pro a couple of years ago and it was useless . Now the ordinary Limewire is much better . They are trying to close down all free sharing sites . It is not illegal YET, some of its content is illegal to share.
-
idk...i tried to download it on my laptop but i didn't keep up with my security updates and it got infected with viruses, so i had to delete it. its still kinda messed up a year later! i only got to enjoy it for like 10 mins :(
-
Yes, Limewire (and other peer-to-peer programs) are legal. However, the use of Limewire for downloading copyrighted material (ie. music and movie files) is very illegal. Many people in the US and other countries have been successfully prosecuted for doing so. Many of these received completely unreasonable fines in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. I do not use Limewire, but I do have a Torrent program which is basically the same thing. Here in Canada it is still illegal, but ISPs cannot be forced to reveal the names of torrent users to the record/movie companies (at least not under current legistlation). This is not the case in the US and the MPAA and RIAA have gotten several convictions already, although I believe that most are under appeal. Hope this helps.
-
No. It got to be legal somehow. It is a Bittorent client, where you can get a lot of pirated stuff. Bittorrent is slow unless you seed to others, which uses up your internet, and the Bittorrent providers suggest that you try uploading (seeding) at least 1.0 ratio of download. That means if you downloaded a whole song, you need to use up your internet to give the file to someone else too. If not, you are known as a leecher. Leechers are supposed to get slower downloads. So, be sure to seed. If no one seeded, the Bittorent filesharing network will collapse.
