Joss Stone: best female singer since Janis Joplin. Sings blues at a very young age like she's lived for a very long time and experienced a lot of life's pain. I hate most of her music but there's no denying Celine Dion's voice. I've heard her hold a note with such power that it gave me shivers. Sad that most of her stuff is overproduced and overly-glossy. Can't go wrong with Janis Joplin herself. I'll think of others but that's a start.

I have answered this before but I will tell you again... Mariah Carey takes first place. I think Annie Lennox sounds great too so she is second.
-
cjoss stone-not exactly sure why, though
-
Whitney Houston in her prime. Why is because it just is a GOOD voice. Sarah McLaughlin - She has a unique voice and good pitch. And other favorites I think in their own way are very good singers: Joni Mitchell k.d. lang Emmylou Harris Bonnie Raitt Dusty Springfield Faith Hill Shania Twain
-
I like Jewel i think she sounds very sweet. I like Norah jones too her voice is soothing.
-
EmmyLou Harris, her voice combined with her choice of songs as well as her choice and use of instruments, they compliment each other.

Leigh Nash has the best voice of all…truly amazing! Leigh has a smooth 'n sweet, ethereal sound, coupled with a lilting style that is beyond mesmerizing. She's deceptively addicting. Leigh is one of those young veteran aces who’s been so very much under-rated, just the same as SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER was (the band Leigh sang as front-woman for). Leah’s newly released solo album, Blue on Blue is a must-listen to. Check out the range of Leigh Nash nuggets to be found on You Tube.

There was an opera singer in the 1800s who was as popular as any one today but without t.v. and radio. Her name was Jenny Lind. But since I have never heard her sing I'll also pick a modern singer who I think could fit the bill. I pick Aretha Franklin. She has an amazing voice and she knows how to use it. What sealed it for me was when she stepped in and sang for that famous opera guy whose name escapes me. She did an amazing job and it was spur of the moment. She's a great lady and a great talent.

Greatest is impossible .. great? Patsy Cline, Whitney Houston, Lee Anne Rhimes, Barbra Streisand, SO many .. too many opera divas to mention, Judy Garland (no lessons and no sound techniques to make her sound better), Billy Holiday (same remark for her!) .. and that's just the tip of the frosting in my life time!
-
It isn't possible for me to name just one. The first four that come to mind are Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Barbara Streisand and Karen Carpenter. Four different genres, and four women with spectacular vocal ability. Some may disagree with Christina Aguilera, that she over sings, but I've never heard another artist hit so many separate notes so clearly and so quickly.

Obviously, that answer is in the ear of the beholder. While Karen Carpenter's voice was good, in my opinion, and being a professional musician/recording artist myself, there are far better vocalists than she.
-
In my opinion it would be a tie between Mariah Carrey and Celine Dion.
-
This is tough, but I am going to say Roberta Flack, with Etta James and Sarah Vaughan, along with Billie Holiday as honorable mentions.

Tarja Turunen. She can hit those high notes like anything. What I'd give to sing like her...
-
Hardly anyone has heard of her, Sandy Denny. My favorite song by her was 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes'. Judy Collins recorded the song, helping to bring Sandy Denny to attention. A cover of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", sung by Nina Simone, is used in the film The Dancer Upstairs and a Judy Collins version of this song can be heard in the film A Walk on the Moon. Sandy Denny (6 January 1947 – 21 April 1978), was an English singer and songwriter. She is best known for her involvement with the British folk rock movement, including two spells as a member of Fairport Convention, as well as her duet with Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin's 4th album in 1971 - the song "The Battle of Evermore".

Mahaila Jackson She had a fantastic voice!
