Research to date would seem to suggest that spina bifida is resultant from a combination of genetics and environmental influences. In other words, there looks like there are certain gene interactions that would predispose a developing fetus towards this defect, but may not be the sole reason for it actually occurring. There is research looking at vitamin deficiencies or other toxins present within the mother during the early stages of fetal development. There are some wonderfully informative websites you can check out. I've provided some links below, if you're interested. http://www.sbaa.org/ http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/spina_bifida/spina_bifida.htm http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/birth_defect/spina_bifida.html

Yes, spina bifida is genetic. My son was born with SB, and my great great great grandmother had 2 children with SB. It is because the women in our family lack folic acid in our bodies, and the males are carriers. In other words. My daughter could have a child with spina bifida. My son's daughter could have a child with SB. If I had a sister, she could have a child with SB. If my daughter has a son, his daughter could have a child with SB.
