  • Your gas gauge gets its input from the 'sending unit', part of the fuel pump assembly in the gas tank. If your car is running, presumably the fuel pump works and therefor there whouldn't be an electrical problem (blown fuse). But just to be on the safe side, check your fuses. If there isn't anything electrically wrong, then the sending unit needs to be replaced: This is a fuel pump replacement, which involves dropping the gas tank to get at the assembly. If you don't know what to do, then this is DEFINATELY a job for a professional...do NOT mess with your gas tank otherwise! http://www.trustmymechanic.com/parts_gallery/fuel_sending_unit.htm
  • Always carry extra gas with you in an approved gas can. Unless you know about cars, I'd suggest taking it to a mechanic.
  • Until you get it fixed, use your trip meter to estimate how much fuel you've used. When you fill up zero the trip meter. When the trip meter shows you've used about 1/2 a tank, refill. I'm presuming you have some idea how far a tank takes you.
