What is the fastest street legal car in the world?

The answer changes as newer, faster models come out. As of this posting, April 2005:

How would you define the most amazing production car in the world? Would it be:

The car with the most horsepower?
The car with the fastest top speed and acceleration?
The most expensive car?

At the moment, the Bugatti Veyron appears to have it all:
A W-16 engine that can produce 1,001 horsepower
A top speed of 250+ mph (400+ kph)
A zero-to-60 time of three seconds
A zero-to-180 time of 14 seconds
A price tag somewhere in the $1 million range.

Apparently, the Bugatti Veyron is the fastest, quickest-accellerating and most powerful car at this time, but there's no telling when a faster car will be made.

The Bugatti has hit the 248 mph mark, but I do not think it has actually made it into production status. A Sultan may have taken receipt of one and maybe the CEO of Bugatti has one in his garage. With that in mind, the McLaren would appear to be the logical "winner". You really can't consider the Bugatti as a street legal car if you can't get one on the street (even if you have the $$$).

The Koenigsegg CC has 390 kph (242 mph) top speed sited in the press release, which is presumably from manufacturer's data. The McClaren speed of 240 mph comes from independant testing (ie, not the maker of the car).

Calloway had a vette hit 250+ mph. The Hammer, I think. I don't know if that was a one-off or actually made it to production, but the same logic re the Bugatti invades my thinking, and gets me back to the McLaren.

Of course, all this focuses on straightline speed. If you consider speed when not going in a straight line, the McLaren becomes even more obvious a choice. How many races have the Bugatti and/or Koenigsegg CC won (or entered)?

out the box 0-60 in 3.5 and 11.5 1/4 aint bad for a Zo6 ot the Z1R i'm talking NA 427 7 liter motors here. Yeas those numbers have been done and beaten with change of tires....and the aaerodynamics have no issue ...it eaasily makes 200 in bone stock form...an cold air air filter system and slight tune pushes it well over 200.

ok everyone is wrong. The fastest car is the swiss-made wester faster one, which beats the veyron and the SSC Ultimate Aero. It has a top speed of 260 mph. But it is ugly as hell. And the guy who said Jay Leno's car is the fastest, is wrong. Jay Leno is a fat ass, so he would weigh the car down, and make it barely go past 60 mph lol

A custom engine powered twin screw supercharged produces over 2.000bhp - custom transmission and most other parts as well // 0-60mph 1sec, 0-100mph 3sec, 0-220mph 7sec. top speed above 250mph and street legal, and it can troughout changing boost/timing run with alcohol and will be even faster.

first of all i would like to say that the Koenigsegg CCR has beaten the mcLaren F1's speed record by passing 241
the fast car that i know of to be street legal would be the Henessey Venom 1000 viper
it produces in excess of 1000 horse power and more than 1100 ft. lbs torque it goes 0-60 mph in 2.25 seconds and has a quarter mile time of under 9 seconds at 149.6 mph top speed of 255mph and runs a stading mile at 217.6 mph (from 0-217.6 mph in one mile)
did i mention its probably the cheapest car that goes over 200mph that you can buy only $225k or if you already own a viper it'll cost you only $140k. hennessey is coming up with something even BETTER real soon, they are going to twin turbo their bored viper engine that pulls 800hp naturaly aspirated. they are expecting the twin turbo to run at over 1300hp!!! that will definitely take on any challenger
