  • basically stem cells are those that can form multiple tissue types.. these are most commonly found in embryos and fetal tissues..and less commonly in adults.. The research , which is somewhat controversial is to use these cells to treat conditions that are degenerative (alzheimers/parkinsons) or other afflictions such as paralysis.. and by the use of stem cells can replace the cells that are lost/damaged. stem cells may be used to produce brain cells, neurons (nerve cells) etc. so this is why their study has caught the attention of the scientific community
  • Stem cell research studies stem cells for the purpose of developing medical treatments. Many people expect this research to result in cures for many kinds of human maladies. The ethics of stem cell research hasn't matured to the degree that all people are comfortable with it yet. For one thing, until recently, stem cells were mined from aborted fetuses. But, there are other issues, for example: what are the limits on creating "designer humans" from stem cells.
