When I was in drug rehab, my counselors told me that alcoholics actually have an allergy to alcohol. The alcohol works in a different way in their brains that makes then more susceptible to dependency. I had a problem wih heroin, which I used as a coping mechanism. The definition of addiction in Webster's is: 1: the quality or state of being addicted <addiction to reading> 2: compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal ; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful Withdrawal is the last stage of addiction. They say after you form an addiction and break it, you are more susceptible in the future to such things. People with prior addictions, who have sworn off substances, can relapse with eating, gambling, shopping etc. A nasty disease (I like to think of it as dis-ease) which I hope we can all help our children stay away from. Hope this helps! ~Maggie
