I think its for people who like to play music and alot of nerds like to play music but there is also alot of band players who arent nerds

No way. Think about it: who's going to look like nerds at an instrument-playing contest: a person who never went to band in school or a person who did take band in school and understood it? The nerds are the people who are not willing to try what others say is nerdy.
