Why did this song have to come on :(
-
Not sure, probably everything that was going on at the time...hippies....war...etc etc. I guess thats most probably what he wrote it about!

White sheets - the video was full of them, wasn't it?

Awesome song! Great meaning.

Gun man. How on earth could anyone want to kill a person yet alone someone who can write songs like this.

"This guy is a Commie!" Just kidding... usually I just think "Wow, great song, but I'm pretty sick of hearing it. <changes radio station>"

I like John as much as the next guy, but I think the song is a mess musically and philosophically: - If you have to get rid of religion to get world peace, that's not "all the people sharing all the world". That's "all the people being more like me so the differences go away so they can share all the world". - Eliminating possessions? So everyone will just share everything without concern for themselves? This is not about *humans* living in peace, it's about some other species. Humans do share selflessly sometimes, but it will never be a permanent and reliable worldwide default. Possessions are here to stay. - "I hope someday you'll join us". This is really the core of the failure, philosophically: the notion that we're not *already* joined. Who is he talking to? The nasty people who aren't sharing all their possessions and have a religion? THOSE are the people who make up 95% of the planet! So the 5% (really, more like .005%) who believe what he believes are going to lead the rest of us to Utopia? C'mon! I'm dumb, but I'm not that dumb. The problem with "Imagine" (aside from the syrupy soft-focus arrangement and monotonous rhythm) is that it's not grounded in reality. I want to imagine a peaceful world too: but one which includes actual human beings, not imaginary godlike wraiths floating in a boundless sea of selflessness. On the plus side, it makes a great first-year piano student exercise :)
