Yes. Once in a (very) blue moon you come across somebody so angry that they cannot acknowledge what you are saying unless you at least begin at their current level. This is because they are demanding recognition of their agitation and the only way to provide that so that they start to respect what you have to say is by allowing their 'state' to get to you too.

When you know something needs corrected, and you've exhausted all the polite avenues.

Yes. Simplest example - someone who keeps talking when you have something you absolutely must say. Like FIRE! not a time for politeness.

Why, of course not. As the saying goes, politeness is akin to godliness. :-)

Well, I suppose. Sometimes when I ask a question I receive hostile, insulting, even vulgar answers. For the most egregious among them, I don't respond at all. Otherwise, I thank the person for responding and wish him/her a Happy whatever day it is. Now, if someone is spouting racist/hateful/bigotted crap..I see no reason to be polite. :)

Yes. Sometimes others are just abusive in their own behavior that they need to be taken down a peg or two. That said, I don't think it's appropriate here ever as we have an option of mediation -- but I also think that frank honesty isn't "impolite" in a question and answer forum. Sometimes a truthful answer, especially of an "opinion" question might be construed as "impolite". In that case, I think honesty is more important.

Yes, there are times when nothing else will work, so you have to do what works to get results.
