It depends what kind of games you're into. You've got free online games ranging from adventure to point-and-click to resource management to ball physics and what have you. If you're not sure what kind of game you want to play and just want to mess around, I'd recommend www.jayisgames.com (I'm no affiliate, sponsor, or paid advertiser of this site, I just really like it). It has links to all sorts of online games (all free, except for some download ones) which can either be played in your browser, or downloaded onto your hard drive. Take note, it's a site which reviews and discusses online games, and doesn't actually make them. Nor is it necessarily the best and only game site on the internet, but it's my favourite. I'm sure other people would offer theirs too.
