You find Ave Maria sad-sounding? I'm so, So, SO sorry to hear that. If you want a sad piece, listen to Verdi's opera, Rigoletto, where old man Rigoletto is begging for the return of his abducted daughter, Gilda. That is really heart wrenching, especially if you see it on DVD.

One of the saddest songs I've heard is "Traumerei"--one of the pieces of Robert Schumanns's "Fantasiestucke". I listened to Vladimir Horowitz play it on the piano during a concert he gave in Moscow after he returned after being exiled for many years. 4th movement of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony in B Minor. Terribly depressing, but beautiful nonetheless.

Some beautiful music listed above. My all time favorite for sad classics is Albinoni Adagio in G minor. I just listened to it now and had to go for a walk before I typed this. I find it a very moving piece of music and I encourage everyone to have a listen. A couple of other pieces are: Handel - Sarabande - maybe not sad but still emotional Pachelbel - Canon in D minor - is also excellent.
