  • Before you do that, pick up a copy of Boundaries with Kids and try their methods. I've seen it work on kids in a juvenile facility. Basically, I doubt that a seventeen year old has much in his possesion that you haven't provided. What you do it rent a storage locker and move ALL of his stuff out while he is out of the house (or lock it up at home if you can be sure he can't just take it). Leave in his possesion only what you are required to provide by law. A mattress, bedding and enough clothing (of your choosing, not his) to get by. When he gets home, explain the rules he is going to have to live by, and that you will return one item of your choosing each week that he complies. Naturally, his most prized possesions will be the last ones returned. These rules will include things like attendance at school, behavior at school, performance at school, manners at home, respect at home, chores at home, curfew, bedtime, getting up on time, etc. He should have everything back in time to move out when he graduates.
