I always use newspaper, or normal white paper... but my flower pressing was always rudimentary.

I use an old telephone book. Put something heavy on top of it.

I've used paper towels and wax paper. And I've used phone books and large coffee table books to press.

Newspaper works well. It is absorbant and smooth. Some use wax paper but I think you might run into problems with moisture causing mold growth and changing the colors as the plant has time to begin decaying before it dries. And ironing/heat can change the colors of the flowers (cooking them), so I don't recommend that. I like the old phone book idea too because the paper is newsprint paper, held in place by the book binding and you can press lots of flowers in the book pages without having them shift around a lot. Just use lots of weight on top of it.
