I do not know for sure but I suspect that it was due to firmly believing slave owners who wanted to convert their slaves. As well as use it as a tool of enhanced control. It probably helped to quell rebellion like religion usually does.

In America, if that is what you mean, it began on plantations. Slaves often sat in the balconies of the white churches, but preachers began to emerge out of the company of slaves. Sometimes, the only opportunities for them to preach and for the congregations to gather would be for funerals and they became all day affairs with great preaching and singing. Early African American protestant churches in the south included the African Methodist Episcopal church and Baptist churches.

I think the first independent black denomination in the U.S. was the African Methodist Episcopal. They were chartered in 1816. The First Colored Church (later the First African Baptist Church) was, however, founded in 1777.
