  • no. anyway you do it at home will make him torture not die peacefully. Vets will usually work with you on a payment plan for this..just call them. Please do not attempt to do this at home. One of our other ABer's did that and her dog died slowly and painfully for days. If you give them an OD of "human drugs" they won't die fast, they will die slowly and painfully while every organ shuts down and they struggle to breath. IF YOU LOVE YOUR DOG, borrow the money, work it out with the vet, somehow do it humanely. It's not that expensive and at the vet, it will be quick and humane.
  • its not actually that expensive to put ur dog to sleep. i paid about £150 to get mine to sleep. she was very ill and the vet said there wasnt anything they could do. doing it at home is just cruel and u will likly make the dog suffer more. if its too expensive for you then i suggest you go to a pdsa hospital as they cater for the people that cant afford a vet. we took ny dog there once and they are really good.
  • Is he sick, or just old? If he's just old, why can't you continue to live with him until he dies on his own? If he's sick... take him to the vet. I know it can be costly, I've gone through vet bills that have been over what my rent is, but if you love and care for the animal you would do for it what you do for a loved human.
  • Call around and ask for dif prices for Euthanasia. Also call your local Shelters. THe last time i had it done, (its been a while) it was $40. It depends on the weight of the animal. Euthanasia is instant. It will take much longer otherwise, you and your dog will suffer more.
  • I looking for a way to euthanize my 17 year old terrier and it has nothing to do with the cost of the procedure. I live in Nassau county NY and it is illegal to bury you pet in your own back yard - But that is exactly what I am going to do. Max's quality of life is very very poor and it is inhumane to allow the dog to suffer any longer. If I have the vet do it - they dispose of the carcass at the local dump - an eternally resting place that I'm not willing to consider. I need a painless way to end my friends suffering. I not willing to asphyxiate or induce death by other 'brute force' means. Is there a prescription cocktail? or overdose that I can administer. Close the garage door and leave the car running? Anyone have any advice other then a Vet?
  • Try to call the humane society and explain what your situation is, they may be able to help you or refer you to someone who can. Don't give him anything, it will hurt him. If the humane society can't help, call around and ask vets if they can offer suggestions.
  • Scrappy - Thank you for you answer. It is the same post you made before. I'm sorry but I believe that you are not providing factual information and are simply expressing you opinion regarding who should complete the task. There must be ways to humanely (without pain) to put your dog to sleep "at home" 1. Overdose of Xanex 2. Overdose of barbiturates. If you read my post you would know that the cost associated with euthanasia but rather the less then humane method of dealing with the body. I live in Nassau County, NY and It's illegal to take possession of the body and bury him in the backyard.
  • I just had to put my sweet dog, Mana, to sleep today. She was twelve years old and got really really sick, stopped eating, and was throwing up everywhere. I took her to our local Banfield (located inside PetSmart). They were very kind and reasurring. It was $8 for the drugs to put her down, and $100 for the mass creamation. We won't get her ashes back or anything, but we don't have any place to bury her, and couldn't bear to throw her away, she's family. But for less than ten dollars, she was put down very humanely in me and my husband's arms. Our vet does NOT leave the pups in the trash. I live in TX where you CAN take your pooch home for burial, but you can also do the option of mass creamation where they creamate them together and scatter the ashes on a hill for about $100 (which we did due to finanical concerns) or individual cremation, where you get the remains back for about $200.
  • Deal with this extra expense and take him to the vet. Be humane. Geez
  • Most of the answers you get on here are silly city people who dont understand the that some people DONT HAVE THE VET OPTION. If your child needs clothes for school or better yet medical care (which most children need) that will come before the dog outback who is also sick. Imagine that you were having trouble feeding your family and then answer the question about how to take care of the ANIMAL. I for one feel that the place my dog has lived his whole life is where he would want to pass... not in a scary vet office... All you people get real.
  • Pussy's. Give your animal a double dose of xanax. He or she will drift to sleep and not wake up. We all love our pets but grow some balls and allow your animal to die peacefully at home.
  • In many areas there are Animal RESCUE groups that are associated with some very compassionate vets .... Please contact one of these OR a Shelter and see if they can refer you to a vet who will do it for free or very low cost ... +5
