  • That is a really interesting question.. I read a book recently that was about the commoness of the surname 'Smith' and in the book it said that as of 1969 there were approximatly 1.5 million unique surnames. As of 2000 the US Census, there were over 6 million last names identified in the USA that are unique or nearly so (occurred 2-4 times) There is a really great document from the US Census - here:http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/surnames.pdf Pages 2-4 has the best information.
