I think the large, quiet, nanny breeds are great around kids. In the story Peter Pan, Nan was a Newfoundland. That is the breed I am partial to. They are famous for their excellent temperament around children and good guarding instincts, famous water rescue dogs. Here's a quote from a Newfie book, "Newfoundland dogs are renown for their friendliness, love of children and for their rescuing abilities. Since the breed was developed in Newfoundland over a hundred years ago, there have been many stories told of Newfoundlands saving passengers from sinking ships and rescuing children in trouble while playing in their favourite swimming holes. But there is one Newfoundland that showed bravery and loyalty beyond what is commonly credited to the breed. His name was Gander and he gave his life protecting Canadian and other Commonwealth soldiers on the beaches of Hong Kong Island during World War II." And here is one website of a well known breeder of Newfoundlands with terrific photos of the dogs, many with children. http://www.sweetbay.com/companion.htm

NO breed of dog is safe around small babies or very small children. Animals don't think like people.

wELL AS YOU CAN SEE MY AVATAR I HAVE A PIT AND MOST WOULD DISAGREE BECAUSE OF CRAP THEY SEE ON THE NEWS BUT MY DOG HAS BEEN THE BEST PET WE HAVE EVER OWNED. HE IS SO LOVEABLE AROUND MY CHILDREN THEY CAN DO ANYTHING TO HIM AND HE JUST LAYS THERE AND PLAYS WITH THEM. i HAVE A 4 YR OLD DAUGHTER AND i TELL YOU WHAT NO ONE WILL EVER BE MEAN TO HER AS LONG AS HE IS AROUND!!!! IF YOU RESEARCH A PIT AND GET EDUCATED A PIT IS NORMALLY MOST AGGRESSIVE AROUND OTHER ANIMALS... IT IS ALL IN THE WAY THEY ARE RAISED. OF COURSE IF YOU MAKE YOU DOG AGRESSIVE HE WILL BE A MEAN AND BAD TEMPERED DOG JUST TREAT HIM AS ONE OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS AND KNOW HIS MOTHER AND FATHERS BACK GROUND AND YOU WILL FIND HE MAY BE A GREAT FAMILY PET AS I HAVE FOUND MINE TO BE. HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL JUST RESEARCH THEM AND FIND OUT WHAT YOU CAN HERE IS A LINK FOR YOU http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/breedinfo.html

I wouldn't recommend a puppy of any breed around a baby just because they are quite hard to control- especially at the teeting stage! However, an older, calm, well mannered dog can be great around babies and small children. Of course it's all in how the dog is treated and how it behaves, but many different breeds can be "family dogs". Beware, however, than some dogs can form a jealousy against any new addition to their home. SLOWLY introduce dog & baby. Good Luck!
